Kevin McCann Receives SABR Grant

Our chapter president, Kevin McCann, has received a grant from SABR for his research proposal, "1903-1924 Kitty League Player League Index" which will allow him to recoup expenses for his project.

The early years of the Class D Kentucky-Illinois-Tennessee League (1903-1924) were notorious for incomplete or no season statistics. There are none for the 1903, 1904, and 1905 seasons and the 1923 and 1924 seasons are incomplete. It is difficult to tell the story of a particular league's season where there are no batting, pitching, or fielding statistics to tell who did what.

It has been Kevin's goal to eventually complete them, and the grant helps give the incentive and time schedule to get them done sooner.

Kevin will spend the next year-and-a-half copying box scores from newspaper microfilm and entering them into a program that does the calculating for him. This project will not only benefit Kevin's own work on the league, but all the statistics will be added to the new SABR Online Minor League Encyclopedia currently under development.
